Media Landscapes in Europe: An East/West Comparative Perspective
Both qualitative and quantitative descriptions of media landscapes in the Eastern and Western member states of the European Union suggest that, as a general rule, media are less free and less plural in the former communist countries than in the rest of the continent. This presentation takes a look at the EU’s old and young democracies in a comparative perspective, and identifies some of the differences of their political landscapes that might explain these differences in their media landscapes.
Speaker: Peter Bajomi-Lazar, Professor of Mass Communication at the Budapest Business School. His latest monograph is Party Colonisation of the Media in Central and Eastern Europe (Budapest & New York: The Central European University Press, 2014); his latest edited volume is Media in Third-Wave Democracies. Southern and Central/Eastern Europe in a Comparative Perspective (Budapest & Paris: L’Harmattan).
Der Vortrag wird in englischer Sprache gehalten.
